Severe plastic deformation techniques including high-pressure torsion (HPT) have been widely used to produce nanostructured materials for superior mechanical properties. To produce materials with desirable structures and properties using HPT, it is essential to understand the fundamental mechanisms of the structural behavior of materials under HPT processing. In this presentation, I will discuss some recent results obtained by my research group including (1) visualization of three-dimensional shear strain patterns imposed by HPT, (2) HPT-induced grain growth and complicated dislocation-twin interactions, and (3) structural manipulation of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) via HPT processing for significant ductility improvement.
